Longhouse Food Revival Austin

Imagine a dinner party that is as thought provoking as it is delicious.  That was my experience last fall when I attended the first Longhouse Food Revival in Renssselaerville, NY.  Curated by James Beard award-wining food writer Molly O’Neill, Longhouse explores, through food and stories, the migration of a people and how they impact the new place they call home.  In New York, we heard stories about the Oaxacan community in Poughkeepsie, NY (who knew!) while dining on a gorgeous roasted pig.  It was a magical night.

Needless to say, when Molly, my writing coach and mentor for the last year, asked where else she should hold Longhouse events, I jumped at the chance to help bring one to Austin. My blog disappearing act for the last two months can be partly explained by this announcement. Longhouse Food Revival Austin is next week!  Join us Friday, February 1st for a fantastic evening of stories, photos and video with an authentic Mexican barbecue.

We’re producing the event in conjunction with the UT Food Lab conference focused on food entrepreneurship and our presenters will share their tales of the business of food writing.  I cannot wait to hear from writer Gustavo Arellano and entrepreneur Melissa Guerra (love her store at the Pearl in San Antonio).  I never tire of listening to Molly share her stories and know that Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Beatriz Terrazas will awe us with her photos. Not to mention how excited I am to see Austin’s very own bloggers Hilah Johnson of Hilah Cooking and the ever charming Rachel and Logan Cooper of Boots in the Oven.

And then there is the food – a traditional Mexican barbecue from Kiko Guerra of cabrito and brisket with sides from Chef Iliana de la Vega of El Naranjo.  Is your mouth watering yet, because mine is.  Don’t be hesitant about the cabrito.  If you haven’t tried it yet, you will love it – it’s one of my favorite proteins.  Whole Foods is rounding out dinner with a luscious avocado ice cream with a blood orange sauce.

Oh, and the booze.  We’ll have margaritas from Paula’s Texas Spirits & Republic Tequila and Tex Mex beer from Twisted X.  It’s going to be fun!

So grab your tickets and come join us.  I promise you it will be a memorable evening.

Molly and I are also presenting a writing workshop on Saturday, February 2nd.  We’ll be practicing Molly’s Writing with the Senses exercises and techniques while we all stretch and grow with our writing voices.  It’s a great way to refresh your writing brain.
